Community invited to learn about Iowa City’s recent sustainability rating through the STAR program

Community members are encouraged to attend an upcoming event that will highlight Iowa City’s recent recognition for excellence in sustainability while discussing methods to continue to make it better.

Earlier this month, Iowa City received a 4-STAR Community Rating for sustainability from STAR Communities, a nonprofit organization that evaluates cities for their sustainability efforts. STAR stands for Sustainability Tools for Assessing and Rating Communities. Iowa City is one of only five communities in Iowa to be rated and is the highest scoring city in the state to date.

To mark National Community Development Week, the City of Iowa City’s Neighborhood Services Division will sponsor a donation drive for Shelter House to collect cleaning supplies and personal care products, such as deodorant, shampoo, bar soap, lotion, and toilet paper. Collection boxes will be available at the following locations from Monday, March 28 - Saturday, April 2:

Iowa City is among the top 10 percent of communities in the country for educators specializing in kindergarten through twelfth grade.

A recent study compiled by the research firm GoodCall ranked Iowa City No. 27 out of 267 communities because of its affordable living, healthy job market and strong educational values.

Iowa City Police Chief Sam Hargadine has announced the promotion of Sergeant David Droll to the rank of Lieutenant. The promotion was marked during a ceremony held Wednesday, March 23 at Emma J. Harvat Hall in City Hall.

Lieutenant Droll has been assigned as the Acting Commander of Administrative Services.
