The City of Iowa City Police and Fire Departments, along with the Johnson County Ambulance Services, have collaborated to sponsor youth career academies this summer for students who may be interested in becoming police officers, firefighters, or paramedics. Oakland Cemetery issues grave decoration guidelines for Memorial Day

The staff at Oakland Cemetery, 1000 Brown Street, reminds residents that decorations for Memorial Day may be placed on graves beginning Thursday, May 26 through Sunday, June 5. During this period, wreaths and decorations of all kinds may be left at gravesites, with no restrictions on the types of containers or materials used. The cemetery will also display the Avenue of the Flags along the main entrance road throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

Friends and family members who wish to keep their gravesite decorations after Memorial Day should remove them no later than June 5. If...

Media Conference re: Marcus Owens Investigation

On Monday, May 2, 2016, at 11:21 p.m., Marcus Owens came to the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) to report that he had been assaulted. Owens reported that on Saturday, April 30, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., he was in the alleyway of the 200 block of Iowa Avenue when he was approached by an individual and subsequently struck multiple times. Owens further reported that he was struck several more times by multiple subjects while being called racial slurs. The suspects were initially described as being three white males, average height, and approximately 19 to 22 years of age....

Iowa City Police request public's assistance in identifying assailant

On May 15, 2016, at approximately 2:29 a.m., the Iowa City Police Department responded to the 10 block of S. Dubuque Street for a report of a fight in progress. Upon arrival, Officers located a petite female victim bleeding profusely from her nose and mouth. According to the victim and witness, a white male approached her while she was sitting down and began making advances toward her trying to offer her a ride and to take her home with him. The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a building fire at 142 Paddock Circle on Saturday, May 14 at 5 p.m. The first fire engine arrived on scene four minutes after receiving the alarm and reported fire extended throughout a residential building. All occupants had exited the building prior to fire department arrival.

Fire crews made efforts to fight the fire from the interior, but strong winds moved fire through the attic space of the building and forced firefighters to fight the fire from the exterior.
