Beginning Tuesday, June 21, 2016, traffic on Clinton Street near its intersection with Washington Street will shift lanes to allow for work on the Washington Streetscape project. Traffic will switch to the paving on the east side to allow crews to begin utility work on the west side of the intersection.

Washington Street will continue to be closed east of Clinton Street. Additionally, Washington Street will close west of Clinton Street. These sections of Washington and Clinton Streets should reopened to traffic by July 29, 2016.

Police asking for help in vandalism investigation

Iowa City Police took three juveniles into custody for allegedly committing vandalism across the community. Police say there could be more incidents and are asking people to report it if they come across it.

On June 15, 2016 at around 9:33 p.m. police responded to the Four Oaks Juvenile Shelter for a report of a 14-year-old male, 13-year-old female and 12-year-old male who had run away.

Trailblazer Awards to honor local civil rights activists

A new awards program will honor unsung community heroes who stand up for civil rights and promote positive change. The Juneteenth Trailblazer Awards, presented by Sankofa Outreach Connection and the Johnson County Community Juneteenth Committee and sponsored by the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville, will be held Friday, June 24, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Radisson. Several students will be recognized for their writing and artistic skills as part of the annual Juneteenth celebration in Iowa City.

This year marks 151 years of Juneteenth, a national observance marking the end of slavery in the United States, often referred to as the African American Emancipation Day.

The Manville Heights transit route will detour outbound and inbound due to construction on Park Road.

Weather permitting, beginning Wednesday, June 15, 2016, Park Road will be closed between Riverside Drive and Holt Ave. This closure is necessary to facilitate the reconstruction of Park Road without disturbance to existing trees and utilities in the area. It is anticipated that the closure will reopen to traffic by the end of the day on Wednesday, June 29. The Lucas Farms neighborhood will receive free smoke alarms.

The American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign will be in the neighborhood Saturday, June 18 starting at 9 a.m. and will install smoke alarms inside homes that need them, while also teaching people how they can prepare should a fire start in their home.
