Iowa City Police request public's assistance in identifying assailant

On May 15, 2016, at approximately 2:29 a.m., the Iowa City Police Department responded to the 10 block of S. Dubuque Street for a report of a fight in progress. Upon arrival, Officers located a petite female victim bleeding profusely from her nose and mouth. According to the victim and witness, a white male approached her while she was sitting down and began making advances toward her trying to offer her a ride and to take her home with him. The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a building fire at 142 Paddock Circle on Saturday, May 14 at 5 p.m. The first fire engine arrived on scene four minutes after receiving the alarm and reported fire extended throughout a residential building. All occupants had exited the building prior to fire department arrival.

Fire crews made efforts to fight the fire from the interior, but strong winds moved fire through the attic space of the building and forced firefighters to fight the fire from the exterior.

Mercer Park Aquatic Center at 2701 Bradford Drive in Iowa City will be the site of the next Coffee with a Cop, where area residents are invited to join their neighbors, friends and co-workers to discuss community issues with neighborhood police officers. The event, hosted by the Iowa City Police Department, will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. This is an opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns and get to know police officers in a relaxed setting over a cup of coffee -- no agenda or speeches are planned as part of the program.

Road maintenance scheduled on Bartelt Road

Weather permitting, pavement replacement will get underway on Bartelt Road just north of Roberts Road on Monday morning, May 16. This work will require a lane reduction to one lane of alternating traffic, and total closure of Bartelt Road for short periods during the removal and placement of the pavement to stage construction equipment. It is anticipated that the work will be completed by Friday, May 20.

For the 31st consecutive year, the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Iowa City for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2015. The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded the Certificate of Achievement, the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, for “significant accomplishment by a government and its management,” according to the letter announcing the award.

Registration is now underway for the seventh annual Great Iowa River Canoe and Kayak Race from Iowa City to Hills, scheduled June 11. The event, which provides a recreational opportunity to help build interest in protecting and improving the river, offers race and recreational paddle divisions for canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, and youth.
