The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department is proud to announce a new summer program for teens. The Youth Summer Fun program will run 5-9 p.m., Monday through Friday beginning June 6-August 19. The program is open to students in grades 7-12, and will include many activities such as basketball, volleyball, double-dutch, crafts, gardening and more! No fee is required and enrollment is on-going, however pre-registration is encouraged as space is limited. The program will meet each evening at Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, 200 S. The City of Iowa City Police and Fire Departments, along with the Johnson County Ambulance Services, have collaborated to sponsor youth career academies this summer for students who may be interested in becoming police officers, firefighters, or paramedics. The staff at Oakland Cemetery, 1000 Brown Street, reminds residents that decorations for Memorial Day may be placed on graves beginning Thursday, May 26 through Sunday, June 5. During this period, wreaths and decorations of all kinds may be left at gravesites, with no restrictions on the types of containers or materials used. The cemetery will also display the Avenue of the Flags along the main entrance road throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

On Monday, May 2, 2016, at 11:21 p.m., Marcus Owens came to the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) to report that he had been assaulted. Owens reported that on Saturday, April 30, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 11 p.m., he was in the alleyway of the 200 block of Iowa Avenue when he was approached by an individual and subsequently struck multiple times. Owens further reported that he was struck several more times by multiple subjects while being called racial slurs.
