Volunteers needed for final creek clean-up on Sunday

The final creek environmental clean-up of the year is scheduled this Sunday, Oct. 25 from noon to 3 p.m. on Ralston Creek. Volunteers are needed to remove trash, invasive species, and woody debris to help reduce flooding and erosion and improve water quality.

Weather permitting, beginning on Friday, October 23, 2015, Capitol Street, between the railroad overpass and Lafayette Street, will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate storm sewer and pavement repairs in the area. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by the end of the day on Friday, November 6th.

Motorists are to take note of this construction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Oscar Mayer WIENERMOBILE coming to ICPL

It’s no bologna – the Oscar Mayer WIENERMOBILE will be at the Iowa City Public Library for two special visits.

The WIENERMOBILE will make its first appearance at Preschool Storytime from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28. There will be Halloween and hot dog stories read in the Storytime Room before a tour of the WIENERMOBILE, which will be parked outside of the Library.

At the Iowa City Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20, Police Chief Sam Hargadine and Fire Chief John Grier jointly recommended three young people for a Lifesaving Commendation for actions they took to help save a neighbor who was trapped by fire. Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek presented the awards to Javeyel, Marquelle, and Jaztinique Jones.

The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a building fire at 623 E. College Street at 5:17 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The first unit arrived on scene three minutes after receiving the alarm and reported a working fire with smoke coming from the attic.

The occupants of the building had safely exited the structure prior to the fire department’s arrival. Fire crews made multiple efforts to attack the fire from the interior, but were eventually forced to vacate the building and fight the fire from the exterior using elevated hose streams.

Mayor Matt Hayek presented Chief Hargadine with the Verizon HopeLine Champion Award, which recognizes select law enforcement agencies or individuals across the country for extraordinary commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising community awareness. DVIP Executive Director Kristie Fortmann-Doser of the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP) recommended the Iowa City Police Department for the award for their work as part of the Iowa City Domestic Abuse Response Team.

Sign-up deadline extended for Special Olympics dodgeball fundraiser

The deadline to register teams for a dodgeball tournament fundraiser for Special Olympics in Iowa has now been extended another week to Friday, Oct. 30.
