Is taking climate action one of your resolutions for the new year? There is still time to apply to the Iowa City Climate Ambassadors program. The application can be found on the Climate Ambassador website and will be accepted through Monday, Jan. 10, 2022.

The program was created to engage climate change leaders within Iowa City to help advance goals identified in the city's Climate Action and Adaptation Plan.

Thirty-nine residents have successfully completed the training since the program began in 2020. As part of the training, Ambassadors:

Join the Office of Equity and Human Rights and One Iowa for a complimentary 1-hour virtual "lunch and learn" on LGBTQ 101 and Best Practices designed for area businesses and organizations.

The virtual event will be held from noon-1 p.m. Wed., Jan. 19, 2022. The training is limited to 150 participants, so please sign up early to reserve your spot. Duplicate registrations will be deleted to afford this opportunity to as many participants as possible.

Iowa City offers Targeted Small Business grants

The City is offering a limited number of small matching grants with priority given to Iowa Targeted Small Businesses (TSB) located in Iowa City.

Businesses without employees may qualify for up to $2,000 while those with employees (and for whom W-2s are filed) may be eligible for up to $5,000. The deadline to apply is Feb. 4, 2022, and grant recipients will be notified by Feb. 11, 2022.

Businesses with an Iowa TSB certification will be given priority in the grant evaluation. TSB certification is designed to help women, individuals with minority status, service-connected...

As a result of the investigation into the Dec. 21, 2021, shooting at 402 Fairchild St., Carter L. Wolf, 24, of Iowa City, has been arrested and faces the following charge:

Reckless use of a firearm causing serious injury

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

At the first meeting of the new City Council, Bruce Teague was again voted Mayor by his fellow councilors, while newly elected councilor Megan Alter was chosen as Mayor Pro Tem.

The votes took place at a special formal meeting of City Council at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022. Both votes for Teague as Mayor and Alter for Mayor Pro Tem were unanimous.

Arrests made in Dec. 21, 2021, armed robbery

At 10:58 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2021, Iowa City Police responded to a report of an armed robbery at GreenState Credit Union, 825 Mormon Trek Blvd. The victim reported using a drive-through lane at the credit union when they were approached by a subject with a gun. The victim was able to put their vehicle into drive and safely escape.

On Monday, Jan. 3, 2022, as part of the investigation into the robbery, Iowa City Police served warrants at 1103 Prairie du Chien Road and 941 Dewey St. in Iowa City. A firearm similar to the one described by the robbery victim was recovered from...

Winter curbside collection tips

To ensure your curbside materials are collected safely and successfully throughout the winter season, follow these tips:

Place carts or containers on a solid surface for pickup, such as the end of your driveway or the edge of the right-of-way. Do not place carts on a snowbank or in the street. Have carts at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day for pickup. Do not overfill carts. City ordinance states the lids must be closed. Keep at least a 3-feet clear zone around each cart. Keep recycling materials loose—no plastic bags! Also, no glass or Styrofoam.
