School travel reminders with upcoming First Avenue closure

The First Avenue closure will impact travel for parents and students going to and from South East Junior High School, City High School and Tate High School.

First Avenue will close south of Bradford Drive through Mall Drive beginning Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 for continued work on the First Avenue Grade Separation, a project that will elevate the railroad crossing and lower the road, helping to reduce long train delays.

The road is expected to reopen in early September.

It won’t be raining cats and dogs this weekend at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, but rather, “Reigning Cats and Dogs,” a musical roast to benefit the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center, Friends of the Animal Center Foundation, and the Johnson County Humane Society.

Crews will shut-down the 100 Block of North Linn Street today, Thursday August 18, 2016 for the first annual Farm to Street Dinner.

The event will bring together roughly 200 people who will join around a table, outside on Linn Street and share a delicious six-course meal prepared by several downtown Iowa City chefs with locally produced ingredients. Money raised will support local food efforts including the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Foundation and the Iowa City Community School District Farm to School program.

The Iowa City Public Library’s online catalog and digital collections will be unavailable Wednesday, Aug. 17. This includes eBooks and digital audiobooks through OverDrive, digital magazines through Zinio, and research databases.

Portion of Dodge Street to close immediately for tree removal

Crews will be removing a tree that has cracked and split in the 300 block of Dodge Street. To allow for work, Dodge Street will close between Davenport and Bloomington Streets, beginning at 9 a.m. today, Aug. 16, 2016.

Traffic will detour west onto Church Street to Dubuque Street to Market Street, and then back to Dodge Street. The closure is expected to last approximately 4 to 5 hours. Normal traffic should resume around mid-afternoon.

Drivers should be aware of this closure and take an alternate route. As always, use caution when driving through a construction area....
