Iowa City neighborhoods love their parks -- and also love celebrating park improvements with other community residents.

On Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 7), a northeast side neighborhood will host a potluck from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hickory Trail Park, located at the intersection of Hickory Trail (off North 1st Avenue) and Hickory Place to showcase recent park installations: the play structure, swings, and shelter. Registration deadline extended for Iowa River Clean-up; more volunteers needed

The registration deadline for volunteers for the annual Iowa River Clean-up has been extended to next Tuesday, Sept. 8. An additional 50 or so volunteers are still needed for the event, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Paddlers and other volunteers will remove trash from the river and its banks between Sturgis Ferry in Iowa City and Hills Access. Canoes and kayaks will be used to pull trash out of the river, and on-land volunteers will clean up the riverbanks, offload trash from canoes and kayaks, and sort materials for recycling. Road Construction - First Avenue

An emergency water main repair will require parts of First Avenue in Iowa City to be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2. This will impact First Avenue from D Street to Muscatine Avenue.

Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic. Motorists are urged to allow extra time if traveling in this area, as delays will occur. As always, drivers should exercise caution when traveling through construction areas.

Golf outing planned to help raise funds for kids' swimming lessons

City of Iowa City Aquatics Supervisor Matthew Eckhardt is relying on golfers to help raise funds to teach kids the fundamentals of a different sport: swimming. On Friday, Sept. 11, the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department's Aquatics Division will host its second annual Golf Fundraiser to build the swim program’s scholarship fund so that all children who want to learn to swim can do so, regardless of their family’s ability to pay for lessons.

On Friday, August 28, 2015 at 3:52 a.m., the Iowa City Police Department responded to the east side of Iowa City for a report of a vehicle that was just stolen and left a residence southbound in the 200 block of Shrader Road.
