Internationally renowned artist and architect Cecil Balmond, who was commissioned to create a signature public art piece for the North Pedestrian Mall in Downtown Iowa City, will reveal his concept design at a public presentation on Thursday, Oct. 1. The event will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at FilmScene, 118 E. College Street.

Expect traffic delays for 2015 City High School Homecoming Parade

The 2015 Iowa City High School Homecoming Parade will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 , starting at 6 p.m. It will begin at Mercer Park, then proceed west on Bradford Drive to First Avenue. The parade will then travel north on First Avenue to Bates Field, where it will end.

Traffic will not be allowed on or across the parade route once the parade begins. Motorists traveling in the area of the parade route are encouraged to use an alternate route as delays are expected.

In June 2008, floods destroyed the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center on Kirkwood Avenue. Before the waters even receded, plans were underway to rebuild, and now, seven years later, the new facility is finally completed. To celebrate, the public is invited to an open house on Saturday, Sept. 26 from noon to 3 p.m. at the new Center, located at 3910 Napoleon Lane, off of Gilbert Street and Sand Road in Iowa City. MidWestOne Bank Book Drive for The Book End

MidWest One Bank is collecting very special deposits this month to benefit The Book End at the Iowa City Public Library.

The Book End is the Friends Foundation’s used book store located on the Library’s second floor. Volunteers staff the store and proceeds from sales help provide prize books for the Children’s and Teens Summer Reading Programs, purchase art by local artists for the popular Art-to-Go project, and add to the Library’s overall collection.

ICPL Preschool Storytime at Upper City Park Log Cabins

The Iowa City Public Library’s Thursday preschool storytime will move to a special location on October 1.

The Library has partnered with the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department to host Pioneer Storytime and Picnic Lunch at the historic log cabins at Upper City Park, 200 East Park Road, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

The program will include stories, pioneer crafts and learning about Iowa City history. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring lunch for themselves and their children to enjoy an outdoor picnic.

Firefighters battle fire at Seventh Avenue home

At 8:24 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, the Iowa City Fire Department responded to a building fire at 915 S. Seventh Avenue in Iowa City. The first arriving unit reported smoke showing from the roof of a one and one-half story residential structure.

The occupants had safely exited the structure prior to fire department arrival. Arriving crews found smoke throughout the house and fire on the second floor. The fire was brought under control within 22 minutes.

The City of Iowa City is now accepting applications for FY16 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) projects. The Hawkeye pep rally that had been scheduled tonight (Friday, Sept. 18) at 6 p.m. on the Ped Mall has been cancelled. Organizers from the Johnson County I-Club made the decision to cancel due to a forecast of inclement weather. The Hawkeyes will face the Pittsburgh Panthers in a 7 p.m. game on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
