A mobile household hazardous waste collection event has been scheduled this Saturday, Oct. 10, at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE in Iowa City. The event, sponsored by the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. in the center’s parking lot.

During the event, residents of Iowa City, Johnson County (communities and rural areas), Kalona and Riverside may dispose of one box of household hazardous waste per household. Latex paint will not be accepted. For a complete list of items that will be accepted, visit...

City again receives national Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

City of Iowa City Finance Director Dennis Bockenstedt has been notified that for the fourth consecutive year, the City’s Finance Department has been awarded the national Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The award, which is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting, recognizes the City’s FY2016 budget, which took effect July 1, 2015. The City also won the award in 2012, 2013, and 2014, after a nearly 20-year hiatus in which a budget document was not submitted for consideration.

Police to hold dodgeball tournament to raise funds for Special Olympics

Area law enforcement agencies, including the Iowa City Police Department, are continuing to show their support of the Iowa Special Olympics by organizing a dodgeball tournament fundraiser next month. The tournament will kick off at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Grant Wood Elementary School Gym, 1930 Lakeside Drive in Iowa City.

Organizers are looking for as many as 36 teams to compete, with each team consisting of seven to 10 players who are at least 12 years of age. Teams will have a six-match guarantee in this “pool play” style of tournament, leading to the championship game...

City of Iowa City employees schedule "Leaf It To Us!" volunteer day

Employees with the City of Iowa City are organizing a “Leaf It To Us!” leaf-raking volunteer day and are looking for Iowa City homeowners who can no longer do these chores themselves and could use the help. Volunteers will rake and pile leaves at the curb for pick-up. The event, which is being coordinated by the City’s Employee Wellness Committee, is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Downtown Iowa City will be filled with thousands of people this Friday, Oct. 9, as Hawkeye fans converge for the University of Iowa Homecoming Parade, which will result in several street closures, traffic delays, and changes to the City’s transit routes. The annual parade is scheduled to get underway at 5:45 p.m., although traffic congestion in the Downtown area is expected to get heavy around 3 p.m. as parade entries and attendees start to arrive.

UPDATE from Friday, Oct. 2:

The Iowa River Trail has undergone repairs this week between Napoleon Lane and Hills Bank. The trail will reopen for use by 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, although some sections will not be accessible due to the need for more extensive repairs. Users should bypass areas that are cordoned off or that have barricades and safety cones set up. Repairs will be completed next week.
