Update: What to do with trees, limbs, debris from Aug. 10 storm

The thunderstorms and winds that hit the Iowa City area on Monday, August 10, 2020, left hundreds of downed trees, limbs, and wood debris in their wake.

Here is what residents can do with post-storm materials: Beginning Tuesday, August 11, 2020, City crews will remove storm debris that is at the back of the curb in the City Right of Way.

Do not place debris around fire hydrants, mail boxes, sign posts, or other obstructions. Please leave room around piles so equipment can safely access the debris.

The festival will celebrate all the ways Iowa City residents, businesses, and organizations are taking action to address climate change.

Iowa City Monarch Festival kicks off with week #1 fun

The first week of the virtual 2020 Iowa City Monarch Festival took flight on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2020.

To celebrate the first of four Sundays dedicated to helping increase the number of monarch butterflies in the area, the City shared the first video of a series dedicated to teaching residents how to raise monarchs from egg, to caterpillar, to chrysalis, to butterfly.

Pedestrian detour in place on Burlington Street

Burlington and Madison Intersection Improvements Project

A pedestrian detour has been put in place on Burlington Street due to the Burlington-Madison Intersection Improvements Project.

Sidewalk on the south end of Burlington Street from Madison to Clinton Street has been closed to allow for utility construction in the area.

The detour directs pedestrians around the closure by way of Madison or Clinton Street to Court Street.

Iowa City announces three finalists for Police Chief position

City Manager Geoff Fruin announced on Thursday, July 30, 2020, that three finalists have been named for the Chief of Police position.

The finalist are: Jason Lando of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dustin Liston of El Paso, Texas, and Jeremy Logan of Oelwein.

In February, then Police Chief Jody Matherly retired after a 37-year law enforcement career, serving the last three years as Iowa City Police Chief. A national search for a replacement followed the announcement. The job listing was posted to 17 different websites, professional groups, and job search services.
