For the fifth year in a row, co-workers, colleagues, and friends of the late Linda Severson will carry on her legacy by collecting donations for area nonprofits and charities as part of the Severson Holiday Charity Challenge. Severson, who served as the Human Resources Planning Coordinator for the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) from 1994 until her death in 2011, coordinated the City of Iowa City’s holiday donation drive each year to help those in need. If you’re still searching for the perfect holiday gift for a friend or family member or need to find a few extra stocking stuffers, make plans to stop by the Iowa City Holiday Market this Saturday, Dec. 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street. Free parking will be available in the Rec Center lot and in the Chauncey Swan parking ramp.

Registration is now underway for the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department's Winter Break Camp, which keeps kids busy, learning, and entertained during their holiday break from school. This year's camp, 'Tis the Season to be Freezin,' runs Dec. 21-23 and Dec. 28-30 for kindergarten through sixth grade students.

Open House for Outgoing Council Members

The City of Iowa City will be hosting an open house to recognize the 16 years of service for outgoing Council Members Rick Dobyns, Michelle Payne, and Mayor Matt Hayek. The open house will be held at City Hall, 410 East Washington Street, Tuesday, December 15, 2015 from 5:30-6:30 pm. A formal Council meeting will follow at 7:00 pm.

Mayor Hayek was first elected in 2008, and reelected to a second term in 2012. Council Members Dobyns and Payne were elected in 2012 to four year terms. All three terms end at the end of the month.

Iowa City Fire Department responds to three structure fires

On December 7th, 2015 the Iowa City Fire Department was summoned to three separate building fires. At 8:30 a.m. ICFD personnel were dispatched to 18 Commercial Drive for a fire in a commercial building. Firefighters arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the roof of Streb Concrete. Fire crews cut the roof and walls to access and extinguish the fire.

At 9:21 p.m. firefighters were summoned to Beta Theta Pi fraternity at 816 N. Dubuque. The ICFD arrived quickly to find a fire in a third floor bedroom. Firefighters contained and extinguished the fire quickly, limiting damage to...
