With temperatures forecast to take a dive this weekend, the City of Iowa City advises residents to take precautions to keep household pipes from freezing. When water pipes freeze and break, significant damage can occur to homes and household items. The City's Water Division cautions residents to: • Never set your thermostat below 55 degrees. This applies to single-family homes as well as apartments. • Do not shut off heat to areas of your home or apartment that contain any plumbing or water fixtures. Sprinkler system controls fire at 2605 Naples Avenue

The Iowa City Fire Department (ICFD) responded to a reported fire alarm at Menards, 2605 Naples Avenue, at 3:29 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5. The first unit arrived to find multiple sprinkler heads activated in the detached lumber storage building. The fire crew found the fire to be mostly extinguished with small spot fires located in the rack storage. There were no occupants in the structure at the time of the fire.

Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) Chief Sam Hargadine swore in Jeffery Schmidt as a Police Officer during a ceremony at Emma J. Harvat Hall on Thursday, Jan. 7. Officer Schmidt, 26, is originally from Oxford, Iowa, and graduated from Loras College, in Dubuque, Iowa, in 2013 with a B.A. in criminal justice and English.
