Iowa City Fire Marshal Brian Greer retired on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022 after serving for 31 years with the Iowa City Fire Department.

During his three decades with the fire department, Greer served as a firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, and Fire Marshal for the past nine years. He also participated as an EMS Coordinator, Technical Rescue Team Member, Fire Investigator, Fire Inspector, Public Education Program Manager, and was law enforcement certified.

Temporary detour announced for 2-Court Street route; one stop closed

Bus stop 7209, at Kenneth Drive and Gustave Street, will be closed for a two-day detour on the 2-Court Street route starting Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022. The detour will use Camden Road to access Court Street.

Kenneth Drive will be closed to through traffic between Camden Road and Court Street through Friday, Nov 4, 2022, for road work. Access to all residences will be maintained.

Part of 11- Rochester bus route detour ends as Washington Street reopens

One of the two detours on the 11-Rochester transit route has ended, with construction on Washington Street in between Shrader Road and Westminster Street reopening.

All bus stops from Amhurst Street and Mount Vernon Drive, 7434, 7435, and 7436, will reopen Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2022.

North Westminster Street remains closed to through traffic from Washington Street to Bowling Green Place.

The 11-Rochester detour from Ralston Creek to Ashwood and First Avenue remains in place.

Iowa City man sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for human trafficking

The United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Iowa announced this week that Kachimbe Mukanzu, 35, of Iowa City, was sentenced to federal prison for Conspiracy to Engage in Sex Trafficking by Force, Fraud, and Coercion and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Mukanzu was sentenced on Oct. 26, 2022, to 22 years in prison.

According to the United States Attorney's Office:

City files nuisance abatement petition in response to fatal shooting

Following the fatal Oct. 23, 2022, shooting outside of the H-Bar, 220 S. Van Buren St., the City of Iowa City is pursuing additional measures to protect the community from the ongoing serious criminal activity occurring at and around the business since its opening earlier this year. On Friday, Oct. 28, the City filed paperwork in Johnson County District Court seeking a nuisance abatement order. The nuisance abatement filing requests the Court to require the H-Bar to be closed between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.
