Work begins to replace Hickory Hill Park bridge

Crews will begin work on a project to replace the trail bridge located near the 1st Avenue entrance at Hickory Hill Park next week.

The project will remove the current 50-foot, wooden pedestrian bridge that was damaged by creek flooding in 2013. It will be replaced with a new, pre-engineered steel bridge. Work to stabilize the streambank and repair the trail will also be done.

Bring your lunch and learn to navigate the process of employing non-citizens.

The program, called “Know Their Rights: an Employer’s Guide to Navigating the Employment of Non-Citizens,” will be held from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Boulevard SE.

Sign up for your community garden plot on Monday, April 3 and enjoy homegrown produce.

The Iowa City Council identified community gardens as a top priority, and ICPR is excited to announce the addition of two new locations for this growing season at Reno and Kiwanis Parks. This year, there is a new benefit for returning garden plot renters. Patrons who rented a garden plot in 2016 will have the opportunity to reserve the same plot in advance of the open registration. Forms were sent out to previous renters in February with a return deadline of March 20 to save their spot.

The City of Iowa City will collect household hazardous waste Friday at the East Side Recycling Center.

This event, for households only, is Friday, March 24, 2017, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, Iowa City. There is no cost to participate.

Residents of Iowa City and other communities in rural Johnson County, Kalona and Riverside, can dispose of one box of household hazardous waste per household. Latex paint will not be accepted. Controlled burns scheduled for three city parks in the coming weeks

The City of Iowa City will conduct controlled burns at Iowa City Kickers Soccer Park, Terry Trueblood Recreation Area and Hickory Hill Park within the next several weeks.

A comprehensive burn plan was prepared and approved by the Iowa City Fire Department, and considerations will be made for wind direction and required weather conditions. Privately-owned land areas and structures will be protected, and fire breaks will be established along all sides of the burn area.

Iowa City Police officers are investigating an armed robbery.

Officers responded to the Deli Mart located 525 Highway 1 West at around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2017. The employee told authorities he was robbed by a male with a handgun who demanded property.

Iowa City Police checked the area and did not find the suspect.

The victim described the suspect as a black male, 6'2, lean build, wearing a grey sweatshirt and black sweatpants.

Update 9:34 p.m. 3/20/2017

At 7:18 p.m on 3/20/17, the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center received a phone call from a Johnson County resident reporting that he had located a female in a farm field. Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies responded and identified her as Vanessa Jones, the missing resident from Chatham Oaks. Medical personnel were on-scene and transported Jones to an area hospital, where she is being evaluated and treated.

Iowa City Animal Center launches Animal Response Team

The Iowa City Animal Center has formed a volunteer team that will be trained to respond to emergencies in the community involving animals. Incidents range from natural disasters like flooding and tornadoes to animal hoarding and crashes involving livestock on the interstate.

The team is called the Iowa City Animal Services Animal Response Team, and it is the first official community animal response team to exist in Johnson County.
