Two people sentenced in federal firearms case investigated by Iowa City Police

On April 21, Whitney T. Claybon, 32, of Iowa City was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for felon in possession of ammunition. Claybon will serve three years of supervised release following her prison term. John C. Vest-Walker, 35, of Iowa City was sentenced to 37 months in prison for drug user in possession of a firearm, false statement during a purchase of a firearm, and conspiracy. Vest-Walker will serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.

On Saturday, April 30, 2022, Johnson County residents can properly dispose of unwanted or outdated pharmaceuticals and needles. The event will be held in the parking lot of the East Side Recycling Center at 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

With warmer weather finally arriving, it's time for a City spring tradition to begin: the Iowa City Farmers Market!

The Farmers Market begins Saturday, May 7, 2022, on the first level of the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp. It runs from 7:30 a.m.-noon Saturdays from May through October. Due to a decline in vendor participation, there will be no Wednesday Farmers Market for the 2022 season.

Mask-wearing will not be required to visit the market, but all visitors should respect those who do continue to wear masks due to COVID-19.

Iowa City Police seek public's help in assault investigation

At 1:42 a.m., Sunday, April 17, 2022, Iowa City Police responded to the alley in the 10 Block of South Dubuque Street for a report of an armed subject. Witnesses reported seeing two men armed with firearms flee the scene prior to officers arriving.

Three people reported being assaulted during the incident, including one who reported being struck in the face during the altercation. The incident remains under investigation.

The City of Iowa City and GreenState Credit Union have partnered on an initiative that seeks to increase homeownership opportunities for community members who do not meet traditional financial parameters necessary to secure a mortgage.
