Iowa City Police investigate shooting in downtown parking ramp

At approximately 1:25 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, Iowa City police responded to the Old Capitol Parking Ramp, 220 S. Capitol St., for a report of shots fired.

Responding officers found evidence at the scene indicating multiple shots were fired and the preliminary investigation shows several people may have been involved. An adult male was taken to an area hospital with what is believed to be a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the abdomen.

This remains an open and active investigation. No other information is available at this time.

Federal law requiring face masks on public transit buses extended to March 18

Federal law has extended the face mask requirement while traveling on any public transit vehicles, including Iowa City Transit, to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. The extension lasts until March 18, 2022.

Face masks must be worn at transit stops, including the transit interchange, boarding the bus, riding, and while disembarking.

Commercial Energy Efficiency Grant Program opens for eligible applicants

The City of Iowa City announces a grant program aimed at reducing carbon emissions by commercial property owners. Commercial users account for about 20% of Iowa City’s carbon emissions and the goal of the program is to reduce that number. The City will be accepting applications through March 15, 2022, with up to 10 grants being awarded.

The Iowa City Parks and Forestry Division will be removing mature Ash trees from several areas in Mercer Park. Please be advised that work may impede parking on Monday, Dec. 6, 2021, at Mercer Park, Mercer Park Aquatic Center and Scanlon Gym located at, 2701 Bradford Dr.

Put a freeze on home fires this winter

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), half of all home heating fires nationwide occur in December, January and February. Additionally, one in every seven home fires and one in every five home fire deaths involve heating equipment, according to the NFPA.

The Iowa City Fire Department and NFPA recommend that any flammable items be kept at least three feet away from any heat source, such as fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators or space heaters. There should be only one heat-producing appliance plugged into an electrical outlet at a time.
