The Iowa City Public Library and the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department want families to get with the beat.

From 7 to 9 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month through April 5, 2016, families can participate in a drumming session with the Yahoo Drummers at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center Gymnastics Room as part of the Library’s Music is the Word series. Participants will learn how to play percussion instruments from all over the world, creating a unique musical experience with each session.

Volunteers needed for Riverwalk Clean-Up on Saturday

The City of Iowa City and the University of Iowa are partnering on a Riverwalk Clean-Up on Saturday, Oct. 17, during which volunteers will help remove trash from the banks of the Iowa River and spruce up adjacent sidewalk areas. This event replaces the Ralston Creek clean-up that the City of Iowa City had originally scheduled on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Construction begins on Willow Creek and Kiwanis Parks projects

Construction is expected to get underway this week for improvements to Willow Creek Park and Kiwanis Park on the City’s southwest side. Plans call for trail-paving and installation of new backstops, restrooms, and subdrain. The two parks adjoin one another off Benton Street: Willow Creek at 1117 Teg Drive, and Kiwanis Park at the intersection of Aber Avenue and Teg Drive. Residents and other drivers in the area should expect construction traffic in the park areas, as well as on Abbey Lane.

The lease period for garden plots that are offered through the City of Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department ends Friday, Oct. 9. Gardeners are reminded to remove all non-plant material, including wire, stakes, plastic, etc. so that the parcels can be tilled under by the Parks Division.

Excess produce can be donated to Table to Table, a local nonprofit organization that distributes food donations to other area nonprofits for use in meal programs. Call 319-337-3400 to make arrangements for a donation.

A ribbon-cutting will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the North Dubuque Street Pedestrian / Bike Bridge to mark the completion of a 1.1-mile section of the Iowa River Trail, which includes the 540-ft. pedestrian bridge that traverses I-80. The Iowa City Public Library and the University of Iowa’s Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program have joined together to offer job and resume workshops on Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 21.

Students will be available to give one-on-one job-related assistance. Participants can get help from graduate level students to extend computer skills, fill out online job applications, build resumes, and develop interview skills.
