ICPL to Host Annual Chess Tournament Nov. 14

The Iowa City Public Library’s Totally Tweens Chess Tournament will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in Meeting Room A at the Library, 123 S. Linn St.

A staple of the Library’s tween programming, the tournament is held in honor of Steve Young, who was active in the community’s chess population until his death in 2012.

This is a free event, available to students in third through sixth grades. Younger children may participate if they are a member of the United States Chess Federation.

Recycle your political campaign signs!

The 2015 election may be over, but now, what can you do with those campaign signs? City of Iowa City Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jordan reminds residents that if the candidate does not want the signage returned for re-use, campaign signs and materials can be recycled to keep them out of the Landfill.

Paper campaign materials, such as flyers and brochures, can be recycled as mixed paper, but if the paper is plastic-coated (such as an exterior yard sign), it is not recyclable and should be thrown away with regular trash.

Veterans ride Iowa City Transit buses free on Veterans Day

To honor veterans for their service, Iowa City Transit will offer free rides for veterans and their families on fixed-route City buses on Veterans Day, next Wednesday, Nov. 11. The free rides will be provided during all hours of operation, from 5:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Johnson County SEATS paratransit service will also offer free rides to veterans that day. Veterans will need to show the bus driver some form of identification indicating their veterans' status -- a military ID, VA medical ID card, veteran designation on a driver's license, or certificate of release or discharge from active duty...

It’s time to tickle the ivories and celebrate one of music’s most popular instruments: the piano. Join the Iowa City Public Library for Piano Week Nov. 8 through Nov. 14, a special addition to our Music is the Word series.

The celebration begins with the screening of Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037 at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Meeting Room A. This 2007 documentary follows the creation of a Steinway concert grand, #L1037, from forest floor to concert hall, in a process spanning 12 months, 12,000 parts, 450 craftsmen and countless hours of labor.

Rummage ReDux items on display on America Recycles Day on Nov. 15

Upcyclers, craftspeople and artists who repurposed items from this year’s Rummage in the Ramp through the Rummage ReDux program will be showcasing their items on America Recycles Day. The event, scheduled Sunday, Nov. 15 from 2 to 4 pm at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, is designed to help promote upcycling, reusing materials, and repairing items to give them a new life.

City administrative offices at City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11 for Veteran's Day. Other office closures and schedule changes that will be in effect that day include:

As of 11:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 4, leaf crews have completed route #5 and have now moved into route #6. It is anticipated that crews will remain in route #6 for the remainder of the day.

Road Construction - Spruce Street

Weather permitting, on Friday, November 6, 2015, Spruce Street, between Highland Avenue and Deforest Avenue, will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate the repair of a water main in the area. It is anticipated that Spruce will reopen to normal traffic by late afternoon on the same day.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time or to seek an alternate route during this time period. As always, caution should be exercised when driving through all construction areas.
