Iowa Legal Aid and Shelter House are collaborating to provide a clinic aimed at alleviating the burdens of juvenile and criminal legal involvement. Pre-registration is required.

Registration can be done online at www.IowaLegalAid.org or over the phone by calling Iowa Legal Aid at 1-800-532-1275. The deadline for registration is 5 p.m., Thursday, April 6, 2023.

Large winter storm brings reminder to clear sidewalks of snow

Another round of heavy snow has hit Iowa City. With the snow ending around 10 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2023, residents are reminded that they should clear their sidewalks of snow, slush, and ice.

With enforcement not expected to begin until Monday, March 13, and another snowstorm forecast for this weekend, the City urges residents to stay safe when dealing with this heavy snow. Clearing sidewalks as soon as possible will be the easiest time to do so before snow has a chance to freeze over or get packed down.

Construction on the Benton Street Rehabilitation Project is scheduled to begin Monday, March 27, 2023.

The project will encompass Benton Street from Mormon Trek Boulevard to just east of Benton Drive and include the following:

Iowa City Fire Department responds to Sunday structure fire

At 4:47 p.m., Sunday, March 5, the Iowa City Fire Department was called to 250 Lexington Ave. for a possible structure fire. A passerby reported smelling smoke and hearing smoke detectors alerting inside the residence.

Crews arrived on scene within five minutes and encountered smoke coming from the roof of the residence. Firefighters entered the home and discovered a small fire contained to the kitchen, as well as heavy smoke throughout the residence. The fire was extinguished within five minutes of crews arriving on scene.

The City’s Climate Action Grant program is now open, making funding available for community-led climate action initiatives.

The Climate Action Grant program is designed to empower Iowa City students, businesses, and organizations to take climate action and lead fellow community members in supporting activities that promote:

Energy efficiency Low or no-emissions transportation Sustainable lifestyle choices Climate preparedness and resilience

Community invited to attend Community Police Review Board forum

The Community Police Board (CPRB) will host its annual Community Forum to hear views on Iowa City Police Department policies and procedures.

The forum will begin at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 20, 2023, in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library.

Iowa City’s preliminary quarterly finance report for the quarter that ended December 31, 2022, is now available at www.icgov.org/budget . This report provides information on the City’s fund balances, revenues, and expenditures compared to budgeted amounts and budget variances.

The quarterly finance report is required by the City Council’s Financial and Fiscal Policies.
