The Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center must diversify its funding streams and lessen its reliance on city revenue in anticipation of declining property tax revenue. To help us do this, The Center hired Wastyn & Associates to create strategic plans for fundraising and marketing. We have developed a survey to gather information that will help us develop these plans.

Road construction/closure notice: U.S. Highway 6 lane reduction

Weather permitting, beginning on Friday, July 10, U.S. Highway 6 will be reduced to one lane of traffic in the northbound direction, from Newton Road/Iowa Avenue to the VA Hospital. This lane reduction is necessary to remove excess dirt from behind the curb. It is anticipated the work will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, July 10.

Motorists are to take note of this construction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

The end of July is quickly approaching, which means three things in Iowa City:

Annual leases are about to expire. Hundreds of people will be moving in and out of their homes and apartments. Rummage in the Ramp is almost here!

Rummage in the Ramp, now in its ninth year, will take place Friday, July 24 through Sunday, Aug. 2. Rummage in the Ramp is the City’s annual mega-recycling event in which students and local residents are encouraged to donate, rather than throw away, items they no longer need or want. City Council Listening Post

The second City Council listening post will be held at Lucky’s Market, 1668 Sycamore Street, Wednesday, July 29, from 5:30-7:00 PM. Two Council Members will attend each listening post and those two Council members will report back to the entire Council. Members of the community are encouraged to stop by and meet with Council representatives to discuss any community issue. No formal agenda or presentation is planned.

ICPL hosts What It Takes to Become a World Champion with Dan Gable and Tom Brands

Spend the evening with Olympic Gold Medalists, and former and current Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling coaches Dan Gable and Tom Brands, on Monday, July 13, at the Iowa City Public Library as they share what it takes to be a champion.

Gable was a two-time NCAA champion and three times was an All-American, Big Eight champion and Iowa High School state champion. He claimed the gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, without surrendering a single point.

ICPL hours unchanged during Hillary Clinton’s appearance July 7

The Iowa City Public Library will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, and maintain normal operating hours during Hillary Clinton’s visit.

The East Entrance to the Library will be closed, but the Library can be accessed through the West Entrance off the City Plaza. Parking around the Library may be limited.

The presidential candidate will attend a Hillary for Iowa campaign organizing meeting in the Library’s first floor meeting rooms Tuesday morning. The Library expects a large number of people to attend the event, but staff will do their best continue everyday service....

ICPL partners with Senior Center to Offer Computer Classes

The Iowa City Public Library and the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center have joined together to offer computer classes to seniors in the Iowa City community this summer.

The classes will be offered at the Center, located at 28 S. Linn St., and taught by an ICPL Librarian. Four classes are scheduled in July and August.

Party in the Park: July 9 at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area

The Awful Purdies will be the featured musical group at Party in the Park on Thursday, July 9, scheduled at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area at the intersection of Sand Road and McCollister Blvd. The party will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and will be held at Shelter #1.

In addition to live music, the event will offer games, arts and crafts projects, and ice cream. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and join other friends and neighbors in the fun! This is a no-fee event and is open to the public.
