The deadline to apply for funding for community-led climate action initiatives is quickly approaching.

The Climate Action Grant program is designed to empower Iowa City students, businesses, and organizations to take climate action and lead fellow community members in supporting activities that promote energy efficiency, reduce reliance on single-occupant vehicles, encourage care for natural spaces, and enhance quality of life for all.

Public meeting set for Second Avenue bridge replacement

The City's Engineering division will host a public meeting to receive public comment on the reconstruction of the Second Avenue bridge over Ralston Creek.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2021, via Zoom. The meeting is open for the neighborhood and any other interested residents or users of Court Hill Trail.

The 2019 biannual bridge inspection rated the bridge as in need of replacement. The bridge deck has cracks, and current safety guidelines to separate pedestrians from vehicular traffic are not met.

City Council meetings now start an hour earlier

Effective immediately, City Council meetings will now start an hour earlier.

The permanent change means that work sessions and formal meetings, both normally held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, will begin earlier: work sessions at 4 p.m. and formal meetings at 6 p.m.

Animal Services seeks assistance identifying dog’s owner following bite

Between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2021, an individual reported being bitten by a smaller, black, curly-coated dog, possibly a cockapoo, that was loose north of the intersection of Dodge Street and Prairie Du Chien Road.

The dog was seen with a medium-sized American terrier-like dog with a short coat that was white with some tan. Both dogs were loose and ran across Prairie Du Chein, but were retrieved later by two juveniles.

The Iowa City Streets Division has started spring street sweeping operations to remove sand and debris to enhance public safety. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (March 24-26, 2021) on-street parking will be prohibited in certain areas so equipment can access the full width of the street. Vehicles not moved will be towed. “No parking” signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance of any work to alert vehicle owners to move their cars. In July 2020, the Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee recommended that the Iowa City City Council proceed with a proposal for a mural reminding the community and its visitors of the systemic oppression of Black people.
