The City of Iowa City’s Office of Equity and Human Rights is hosting a complimentary webinar presented by José Jiménez. The webinar, Stepping Back Before Stepping In: Preparing for Conversations in a Modern World, will emphasize the use of inclusive language online.

The webinar will take place from noon-1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023.

Jiménez is a longtime Iowa City resident who works at the University of Iowa. While his work at UI is focused on software development, he has extended his reach into advocacy and work related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.  As the accountable leader for the IT strategic goal centered on the IT workforce, he has undertaken many activities to help improve the culture of the IT organization.  Among those activities has been the development of the OneIT DEI committee. His work within that group earned him a staff award for Distinguished Leadership in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Jiménez will be talking about inclusive language and practices.  He will focus on three main areas: introductions, gender identity, and practices for inclusion online in technology-mediated environments.  He will share personal stories, references, and techniques that you can use to make your interactions online more inclusive and help others to feel like they belong.
