Annual Shop with a Cop event helps local youth enjoy the holidays

On Sunday, Dec. 11, from 1 until 3 p.m., the Iowa City Police Department took local youth shopping for the holidays at the Iowa City Wal-Mart. The shoppers were pre-selected to participate and will shop with a police officer for necessity items and gifts for themselves, as well as special gifts for family members. Downtown Shuttle route to temporarily cease operating during UI Winter Break

The free Downtown Shuttle route will temporarily cease operating starting Monday, December 19, 2016 and continuing through Monday, January 16, 2017. Downtown Shuttle service will resume on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 with the start of the University of Iowa Spring Semester.

As you're putting up or taking down your holiday decorations this year, remember that strings of holiday lights that no longer work don’t have to be thrown away -- they can be recycled! Although they can't be set out for curbside recycling, holiday lights that you want to dispose of may be dropped off in special collection bins that have been set up throughout Iowa City and Coralville. The string light recycling program will run through Monday, January 9, 2017. Do not place packaging or other holiday decorations in these special bins, as only the strings of lights can be recycled. Beginning today, Dec. 9, 2016, the 200 block of Washington Street will be open to two-way traffic. Due to predicted inclement weather, additional street and sidewalk paving, including traffic signalization at the intersection of Washington and Linn Streets will be delayed until spring 2017. Work on the Dubuque and Washington Street traffic signal, as well as permanent lighting on the 200 block will continue through the winter months. Weekly property and business owner meetings will be suspended until the spring season when construction commences.

Iowa City reminds property owners and tenants of sidewalk snow removal ordinance

With snow season’s arrival this year, the City of Iowa City reminds residents of the snow removal ordinance requiring sidewalks to be cleared within 24 hours after a one-inch or more snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended.

Sidewalk policy

Property owners are responsible for the removal of snow and ice from all sidewalks that abut their private property. The entire width of the sidewalk must be cleared down to concrete. Update: The "Know Your Rights" program is being rescheduled due to predicted weather conditions on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016. A new date has not yet been set.

The Iowa City Human Rights Office is hosting a program aimed at informing the public of their rights and available resources regarding spousal and partner abuse.
