A new agenda has been posted for the upcoming meetings of the Parks and Recreation Commission, Wednesday, July 13, 2022. The first meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in the Proctor & Gamble Room at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center. The second meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the downstairs lobby of the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center. The third meeting will begin at 7 p.m. outside the front entrance of City Park Pool.

11-Rochester route to detour due to storm sewer work beginning Monday, July 11, 2022

Effective Monday, July 11, 2022 the 11-Rochester route will detour inbound due to road work closing East Washington Street between Westminster Street and Shrader Road. The Rochester route will use Amhurst Street to Hastings Avenue to Windmill Place to Green Mountain Drive back to East Washington Street to detour around the work zone. The work is expected to be ongoing through August 2022.

The inbound bus stops located at East Washington Street & Lemme Elementary (stop 7434) and East Washington Street & Westminster Street (stop 7435) will be out of service during the project...

Downtown hydrant flushing begins July 7

Fire hydrants in the Downtown Iowa City area will undergo flushing and maintenance beginning at 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, through 7 a.m. on Friday, July 8, 2022. This work is done as part of the Water Division's annual maintenance program.

The flushing activities will occur in various locations and will have a minimum impact on the normal flow of traffic for motorists and pedestrians.

988 Suicide & Crisis Hotline launches July 16, 2022

CommUnity Crisis Services, a local nonprofit organization based in Iowa City, is one of two Iowa centers that will be answering contacts for the new 988 number to access the national suicide prevention lifeline, launching nationwide on July 16.

988 is the new, low-barrier number connecting those in crisis to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 23, 2022, to attend Sunrise to Sunset, a day-long fundraising event at City Park Pool. The fun begins at sunrise with lap swim running from 6:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. and open swim from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. All pool admissions will be in a ‘pay what you want’ format and the proceeds raised will directly benefit the Iowa City Parks & Recreation's RecAssist Scholarship Program. This scholarship program provides free swim lessons to children and adults in Iowa City with financial need.

Iowa City Police respond to July 2 shooting

At 8:34 p.m., Saturday, July 2, 2022, Iowa City Police responded to reports of multiple shots fired on Shamrock Place. Responding officers found evidence of shots fired from multiple weapons.

One adult man was hit by gunfire and taken to an area hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The shooting is under investigation and no additional information is available at this time. The Iowa City Police Department does not believe there is an ongoing threat to public safety related to this incident.

The Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association invites everyone to celebrate the history of Lucas Farms Neighborhood with several events held Friday, July 8, through Sunday, July 10, 2022.

Plum Grove is the home that was built by the first governor of the Territory of Iowa in 1844, Robert Lucas, located in what is now the Lucas Farms Neighborhood. He served as governor from 1838 until 1841.

The Robert A. Lee Pool will be closed at least through Wednesday, July 13, 2022. The pool is expected to reopen Thursday, July 14, 2022.

This is due to a malfunction with the main pool pump.
