Gain more insight and develop a better relationship with law enforcement by participating in the 20th annual Citizen’s Police Academy . The academy aims to promote understanding of law enforcement and provide an overview for people who may be interested in law enforcement careers. Classes will be held once a week for 14 weeks, beginning on January 30th, 2017, and will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center.

The good intentions of some area residents have led to some not-so-good outcomes on South Gilbert Street / Sand Road in Iowa City.

A flock of wild turkeys has taken up residence in the timber on the east side of Sand Road, north of the softball diamonds near the railroad tracks. Reports indicate that some people have begun feeding the turkeys or tossing food to them from their vehicles, which has created a dangerous situation for the turkeys and for other drivers, says Liz Ford, Iowa City Animal Services Supervisor.

Human Rights Commission will reschedule Sunday program

The threat of extremely cold temperatures this weekend has caused the Iowa City Human Rights Commission to reschedule a program originally set for Sunday at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center.

“Know your Rights: Spousal and Partner Abuse Laws and Resources” was scheduled to be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016. Since the high temperature that day is predicted to be below zero, the event will be rescheduled. A new date has not yet been set.

Iowa City Police team up with Bruegger's on food drive for Crisis Center

The Iowa City Police Department and local Bruegger’s Bagels stores have teamed up on a food collection drive to benefit the Crisis Center food bank.

“A lot of people need a little extra help this time of year,” said Henri Harper, the Police Department’s Community Outreach Assistant. “Between the holidays and heating their homes, budgets are stretched about as far as they can go. We want to help the Crisis Center fill its shelves to make sure people don’t go hungry.”

Iowa City Transit resumes regular outbound Washington Street routes on Dec. 14

On Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, Iowa City Transit will resume the regular outbound routes on Washington Street. This includes the Towncrest, Night/Sat. Towncrest, Court Hill, Eastside Express, Southside Free Shuttle, and the 7th Avenue routes. Bus stop numbers 7200 (Iowa City Public Library/Senior Center) and 7201 (Washington and Gilbert Streets) will be back in service.

Iowa City’s annual year-end financial report, which provides information on actual income, incurred expenses, and financial position through the end of fiscal year 2016, is now available on the City’s website at www.icgov.org/budget . Compilation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is required by the State Code of Iowa.

Annual Shop with a Cop event helps local youth enjoy the holidays

On Sunday, Dec. 11, from 1 until 3 p.m., the Iowa City Police Department took local youth shopping for the holidays at the Iowa City Wal-Mart. The shoppers were pre-selected to participate and will shop with a police officer for necessity items and gifts for themselves, as well as special gifts for family members. The free Downtown Shuttle route will temporarily cease operating starting Monday, December 19, 2016 and continuing through Monday, January 16, 2017. Downtown Shuttle service will resume on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 with the start of the University of Iowa Spring Semester.

As you're putting up or taking down your holiday decorations this year, remember that strings of holiday lights that no longer work don’t have to be thrown away -- they can be recycled! Although they can't be set out for curbside recycling, holiday lights that you want to dispose of may be dropped off in special collection bins that have been set up throughout Iowa City and Coralville.
