Iowa City continues to offer rent, mortgage, & utilities assistance to those impacted by COVID-19

The City can assist with rent, mortgage, and/or utilities for those impacted by COVID-19. For income-eligible households, you may be able to receive up to six months of assistance for rent, mortgage, and/or utilities that are late or unpaid, up to $4,800. To apply, please contact Shelter House at 319-351-0326.

Crews to tow parts of Iowa, Jefferson, College, Washington, Prentiss, Dubuque, Clinton streets for snow plowing

The City of Iowa City will tow vehicles to allow plows to clear the entire width of the street beginning at 7 a.m. on both Thursday, Jan. 7 and Friday, Jan. 8, 2021.

During this time, on-street parking will be prohibited in posted areas. Vehicles that are not moved will be towed. Crews will post 'No Parking Due to Maintenance' signs at least 48-hours in advance, beginning Monday, Jan. 4.

UI students should pay special attention, as many park their vehicles on the street in these areas.

Crews will remove snow in Downtown Iowa City overnight Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, beginning at 2 a.m. Vehicles parked in tow-away zones will be removed.

Towing will impact Prentiss Street to Market Street, Madison Street to Gilbert Street, as well as N. Clinton Street from Market Street to Church Street. The parking in these areas are metered spots, which do not permit parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Follow all posted parking signs to prevent your vehicle from being towed.

Year-end CAFR financial report now available

Iowa City's annual year-end financial report, which provides information on actual income, incurred expenses, and financial position through the end of fiscal year 2020, is now available at icgov.org/budget . Compilation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is required by the Iowa Code.

The 148-page report will be reviewed by the City Council and submitted to the City's bond holders.

If it feels like you just got done shoveling, you’re in good company. Our end of December snowstorm brought some beautiful white fluff, but it was a heavy fluff. Thanks to our residents for taking care of business and clearing those walks.

To ensure the safety of neighbors, dog-walkers, and those who require sidewalk access, snow should be cleared within 24-hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended. Doing so helps protect the many pedestrians who use sidewalks daily in Iowa City.

Clear your sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall in Iowa City

A reminder, sidewalks must be cleared within 24-hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended, for sidewalks to be used safely by pedestrians.Those who do not remove snow and ice may be fined.

Sidewalk policy

Property owners are responsible for the ice and snow removal from all sidewalks that abut their private property.

The entire width of the sidewalk must be cleared down to concrete. Renters should check their leases to see if their landlord has transferred the responsibility of snow and ice removal to them.

City Transit delayed due to snow; Manville Heights route detoured

Iowa City Transit is currently experiencing delays throughout the system due to heavy snow. These delays are expected to continue as the storm moves through the area. Riders should check the Transit App for arrival predictions and to track bus locations.

Detours

One segment of the Manville Heights route is currently detoured as a traffic accident has blocked access to the route. It will be bypassing Laura Drive and stop 8082 at the Forest View Trailer Park. Passengers can catch the Manville Heights route at stop 8081 at the Foster Road and Laura Drive intersection.
