Road construction and transit service notice: Walmart access road and Highway 1

Weather permitting, beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, the Walmart access road from Highway 1 will be closed for street repairs. It is anticipated that the road will be reopened by 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 16. Traffic wanting to access area businesses should use Ruppert Road.

Due to the closure, effective immediately, Westport and Oakcrest Night and Weekend bus routes will detour. The following stops will not be serviced during this detour: #8013 (Wal-Mart), #8014 (Wal-Mart - moved to Ruppert Rd), #8012 (Aldi - moved to West side of street), #8010 (Hwy1), #8015 (Hwy1), #8016...

Sponsors, golfers sought for Golf Fundraiser to raise money for swim scholarships

The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department and Parks and Recreation Foundation are hosting their second annual Golf Fundraiser to generate funds for a swim scholarship program to ensure that all local kids who want to learn to swim are able to, regardless of their family’s ability to pay for lessons. Organizers are now seeking sponsors for the event, as well as golfers.

Iowa City Animal Care & Adoption Center to be closed Tuesday, July 21

The Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center will be closed on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, to allow staff to participate in the building and mechanical training for the new Animal Center facility. It will resume regular business hours on Wednesday, July 22.

The Animal Center is located at 4852 Sand Road SE, south of Iowa City.

Iowa City Fire Department responds to structure fire at 627 South First Avenue

The Iowa City Fire Department was dispatched at 2:19 p.m. on Friday, July 10 for a structure fire in a single story, detached garage at 627 South First Avenue. There was report of one victim trapped inside the structure.

The first unit to arrive gained entry into the garage and rescued one male from inside. He was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by Johnson County Ambulance Service. His condition is unknown at this time.

Road construction/closure notice: S. Madison Street lane reduction

Weather permitting, beginning on Tuesday, July 14, S. Madison Street, between Washington Street and Burlington Street, will be reduced to one lane of traffic in the southbound direction. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate pavement repair in the area. It is anticipated the work will be completed and normal traffic will resume on Monday, July 20.

Motorists are to take note of this construction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek to serve on White House Conference on Aging panel

Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek will travel to Washington, D.C. to represent Iowa City at the 2015 White House Conference on Aging. The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, July 13.
