City Deer Bow Hunt begins September 18, 2021

The City's Deer Bow Hunt will begin Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021. The bow hunt season will continue through Jan. 10, 2022.

The bow hunt is part of the City’s Long-Term Deer Management Plan, which includes one year of professional sharpshooting in 2019 and an urban bow hunt in 2020 – 2024. The hunts are held only on private property and conducted by the property owner or those with permission from the owner. Before hunting is allowed, Permission to Hunt on Private Property and Waiver of Separation forms must be submitted to the police department and approved.

Thornberry Off-leash Dog Park closed for 3 days starting Monday, Sept. 27, 2021

Weather permitting, beginning on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, the main yard of Thornberry Off-leash Dog Park will be closed to the public. The two side yards will remain open throughout the project.

The closure will facilitate park maintenance. It is anticipated that the work will take about three days to be completed and the park will reopen on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021.

Believe it or not, winter is coming soon. Iowa City homeowners can now apply for home improvement loans to keep warm air in, cold air out, and help the community reach its Climate Action goals.

The City’s Energy Efficiency Program runs from September 1 to March 1 each year and provides Iowa City homeowners with loans up to $6,000 for projects that will lead to a more energy-efficient home. Eligible improvements include:

Iowa City Police save seven lives in 2021 thanks to Narcan

Iowa City police have successfully administered Narcan seven times since the beginning of 2021, saving the lives of individuals overdosing from an opioid.

ICPD patrol officers have been carrying Narcan since Fall 2020 after a months' long effort to equip the department with the lifesaving drug. The City's plan to restructure the police department also calls for officers to carry Narcan.

Narcan - also known as Naloxone - is an opioid antagonist, meaning it counteracts the potentially fatal effects of opioids such as heroin, morphine, fentanyl, and oxycodone. According to the...

The City of Iowa City has hired a new Deputy City Manager, Redmond Jones II, to fill the role previously held by Ashley Monroe. Jones will begin employment with Iowa City on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021.

Jones most recently served as the City Administrator at the City of West Branch, where he worked since 2017. Prior to his tenure in West Branch, Jones held the position of City Manager at the City of Groveland, Florida.
