Beat the heat – enjoy one of Iowa City’s splash pads, or the shade of park shelters.

Hot and humid weather with heat index values over 100 degrees are predicted in the Iowa City area. The City of Iowa City reminds residents and visitors that several City facilities are closed due to COVID-19, including City Park Pool and recreation centers.

The shade of picnic shelters at City parks are open on a first come, first serve basis.

Splash pads remain open, except for the Wetherby splash pad due to construction at the Wetherby Park. Please use social distancing guidelines...

The fifth annual Monarch Festival will be held virtually this August. By moving from a one-day event to a four-day online series, both children and adults will have more opportunities to learn about the beautiful monarch butterfly.

This year's Monarch Festival will feature new material, videos, lessons, and activities dedicated to the Danaus plexippus (the scientific name for Monarch butterfly) and how Iowa City residents can help support the butterfly and boost its declining population.

Party in the Park events suspended indefinitely

Following the continued rise in positive COVID-19 cases in Johnson County, and after careful consideration for the health, safety, and well-being of our community, the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department has suspended the Party in the Park events.

The programs were scheduled on Thursdays in July and August. The Parks and Recreation Department will continue to work with public health officials to determine if future events can continue depending on the number of positive coronavirus cases in Johnson County.

On Sunday, June 28, 2020, Iowa City Animal Services received notification of a resident who was bitten by a dog.

According to the information provided, the bite occurred around 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2020 in an alley north of Mercy Hospital near a red dumpster. The dog is described as white and black, of medium size, and possibly a terrier/pug mix with a curly tail.

Iowa City Animal Services is seeking information regarding the rabies vaccination. If anyone has any information about the identity of the owner, they are encouraged to contact Iowa City Animal Services...

City taking precautionary steps as Army Corps of Engineers increases reservoir outflows

Due to recent heavy rains in the Iowa River Basin, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has increased its outflow from the Coralville Lake Reservoir from 6,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 10,000 cfs.

Due to this change, residents may notice increased water levels along the Iowa River. Low lying areas in Iowa City, including some parks and trails, can be impacted at these outflow rates. There is currently no major flooding event expected with this outflow change.
