Applications to participate in the 20th annual Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA), sponsored by five area law enforcement agencies, are now being accepted. The goal of the academy is to share information and help promote understanding of law enforcement, build better relationships with members of the community, and provide an overview for people who may be interested in law enforcement careers.

City of Iowa City offers Social Justice and Racial Equity (SJRE) Grants

Iowa City-based organizations can apply for an SJRE grant that is specifically designed to advance social justice and racial equity. The City Council approved $25,000 for this grant for fiscal year 2017, which began July 1, 2016. The purpose of the grant is to encourage, empower and engage social justice and racial equity initiatives by funding programs, activities, initiatives and educational outreach that has impacts on eliminating inequities in the community. Iowa City Parks & Recreation needs your help envisioning the future of the Iowa City parks system through the “Gather Here” Parks planning initiative. This plan provides a study of the City’s current active park areas to evaluate accessibility, condition and lifespan of the facilities, as well as providing a visioning component to determine the park amenities and facilities desired by the community. The goal is to shape the park system and facilities in their role as gathering spaces for the Iowa City community.

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, Officers from the Iowa City Police Department will visit with members of G!World at South East Junior High. The Officers were invited to answer questions and provide feedback to a group of 7th and 8th grade students from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. while the group bakes cookies. Officers are encouraged to participate in baking and decorating the cookies. A portion of the baked goods will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

Iowa City Clerk Marian Karr announces retirement

City Clerk Marian Karr has announced her retirement after serving the Iowa City community for the past 37 years. Karr was hired as Deputy City Clerk in 1979 and appointed City Clerk by the City Council in 1983. The City Clerk position is one of the top administrative roles in City government and is one of three City employees directly appointed by the City Council. Karr’s expected retirement date is Friday, Dec. 30, 2016.
