The City of Iowa City is in the process of rolling out new recycling and organics carts across the community, but due to the program's popularity, has run out of budgeted supplies for this fiscal year. Customers no longer need to reserve carts online or by phone. Read below for specific updates for each cart size.

25-gallon organics carts

The City of Iowa City will contact the remaining customers who previously reserved 25-gallon sized carts. All other customers will need to wait until next spring when the next batch of carts is ordered.

The previously scheduled Sept. 6 pick-up event has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience. More than 400 people attended the last pick up event, which cleared our remaining supplies.

Demand for this size cart exceeded initial expectations. The City is in the process of ordering more. Carts will continue to be delivered after they arrive; however, due to high demand, online and phone reservations will not guarantee a cart this year. We apologize for any inconvenience.

65-gallon recycling carts

Demand for 65-gallon recycling carts has also met the budgeted supply for this year. Most who have already made reservations online or over the phone will receive a cart before the end of the year.

Crews are continuing to deliver these carts as time allows; after regular weekday route collections, and on Saturdays. Carts will continue to be ordered and delivered by neighborhood as available.
