Crews begin fire hydrant flushing in Iowa City

The City of Iowa City Water Division began the annual fire hydrant flushing and maintenance program on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, which will continue throughout the summer.

Fire hydrants are a crucial public safety component, providing water for fire protection, as well as to flush the municipal water system after a water main break or service work. Hydrants will be inspected and repaired to ensure reliability during emergencies.

The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department will conduct controlled prairie burns at select City parks over the next month, with one expected to begin on Thursday, April 1, 2021, depending on wind direction and weather conditions.

The park scheduled for a controlled burn on Thursday is:

Due to the highly unpredictable nature of weather, wind, and ground conditions, there are no guaranteed dates for controlled burns for any of the parks. Burns typically occur between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Public meeting set for Second Avenue bridge replacement

The City's Engineering division will host a public meeting to receive public comment on the reconstruction of the Second Avenue bridge over Ralston Creek.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2021, via Zoom. The meeting is open for the neighborhood and any other interested residents or users of Court Hill Trail.
