*The Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, creek clean up at Ralston Creek has been canceled due to low volunteer registration.

Volunteers are needed on two Sundays in October to help clean up Ralston Creek.

The events will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017. Tasks include removing trash, invasive species and woody debris. These efforts help reduce flooding and erosion, while also improving water quality.

People interested in helping should RSVP in advance to the events posted on the Iowa City Stormwater Volunteer Opportunities Facebook page, or call 319-541-2385.

The group will meet and receive assignments shortly before noon on Sunday in the parking lot behind the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert St. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability form at the start of the event. Volunteers should come prepared to get dirty: wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and closed-toe shoes or boots. Hats are also recommended. The City will provide tools, gloves, and water.

Two additional events are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 29. Additional information, including the location of the cleanups, will be posted on the volunteer Facebook page closer to the dates.

Cleanups can be cancelled due to weather, shortage of volunteers, or other unforeseen issues. Be sure to check the Facebook page after 10 a.m. on the morning of the event to make sure it’s still happening as scheduled.
