Another piece of public infrastructure will soon become an artist's canvas, and the Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee is now looking for the Johnson County artist with the best vision for the project.

A Call to Artists has been issued for the StairSteps Art Project that will be created on the risers of the steps leading to College Green Park from the northwest corner. There are 40 steps, each of which is approximately four inches high and 70 inches wide. There are three landings, one after each tenth step, but those will not be included as part of the creative surfaces.

The project budget is $3,000, which includes all design, materials, fabrication, installation (including securing the site) and coordination costs. The Call to Artists, which outlines requirements, selection criteria, and the process to submit an application, may be found on the Iowa City Public Art Program 's web page at

Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 2. Mail or drop off to: Marcia Bollinger, City of Iowa City Public Art Program, 410 E. Washington Street, Iowa City, IA 52240 or e-mail

Finalists will meet with the Public Art Advisory Committee on Thursday, July 16, and the artist who has been selected will be notified the following day. Work may begin as early as Saturday, Aug. 1, and must be completed by Friday, Aug. 21.

College Green Park, bordered by College, Dodge, Johnson and Washington Streets in the center of town, is one of Iowa City's oldest parks, established in 1839. Its location, just a few blocks from downtown Iowa City and the University of Iowa campus, makes it a popular, heavily used park for students, downtown employees and neighborhood residents alike.
