Iowa City Parks and Recreation and Backyard Abundance will host the sixth annual Plant Sale fundraiser on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street in Iowa City. Knowledgeable gardeners will be available to help people choose from a wide variety of locally-grown vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit trees and berry shrubs. Proceeds fund educational yard tours and environmental classes in Johnson County.

Volunteers needed for Iowa River Trail clean-up

The final environmental stormwater volunteer clean-up of the spring is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. this Sunday, April 24, along the Iowa River Trail. Volunteers will make their way south of McCollister Bridge to remove trash, woody brush, invasive plants, and downed tree limbs. A range of jobs will be available to accommodate different age groups and skill levels. No experience is necessary.

Today’s meeting (Friday, April 15) focused on business concerns in the project area. Of note were questions regarding gas main changes. There is a meeting on Monday, April 18, for City Officials and MidAmerican Energy representatives to discuss the proposed gas relocation plan on Washington Street. Information regarding the relocation will be shared with property owners and residents at a later date.

The Iowa City Police Department is asking residents to complete a short five-question survey as part of an accreditation process required by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Surveys must be completed and submitted by April 30, 2016 in one of the following ways: mailed or dropped off to the Police Station in City Hall at 410 E. Washington Street, or sent electronically via Survey Monkey.

Weather permitting, beginning Wednesday, April 13, 2016, the westbound lane of Melrose Ave. will be closed between Sunset St. and Birkdale Ct. so crews can begin work on roadway widening and pavement repair work. Westbound traffic on Melrose Ave. will not be allowed to continue past the Sunset St. intersection. Westbound traffic will be detoured south on Sunset St. to Benton St., west on Benton St. to Mormon Trek Blvd., and north on Mormon Trek Blvd. back to Melrose Ave.

Iowa City Fire Department responds to laundromat fire

The Iowa City Fire Department responded to the report of a building fire at 1848 Lower Muscatine Road at 4:55 a.m. on April 12. The first arriving fire company found heavy smoke coming from Laundromania and reported fire in a bank of commercial dryers at the rear of the business. Fire Department members extinguished the fire and ensured that the fire had not spread to other parts of the building.

Damage to the building was significantly diminished by a sprinkler system which suppressed the fire until fire crews arrived. Many businesses in the building sustained mild smoke damage...
