Beginning Tuesday, May 31, 2016, the sidewalk on the south side of Park Road between Riverside Drive and Dubuque Street will be closed due to construction activity for the Iowa City Gateway Project.

Additionally, the sidewalk on the west side of Dubuque Street between Park Road and Brown Street will experience periodic closures for utility work in the area. A detour route using the Hancher Pedestrian Bridge will be posted. Periodic sidewalk closures should be anticipated in these locations throughout the construction season of 2016. Iowa City Recycling and Senior Center staff have partnered on a series of classes designed to help area residents learn more about opportunities for reducing, reusing, recycling and composting. The series will run on Friday afternoons in June beginning June 3, 2016, at the Senior Center, 28 S. Linn Street. There is no cost to attend the classes and all ages are welcome. Weather permitting, on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, construction will begin on the Iowa City Gateway Project, and includes Park Road and Dubuque Street.

Park Road improvements, from the Iowa River to Holt Ave. will begin immediately, and will continue through early September. Lane shifts should begin on Park Road beginning Tuesday, May 31. During this time, through-traffic on Park Road will be maintained.

Mercer Park Farmers Market to open Tuesday, May 31

The City of Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce the opening of the Mercer Park Farmers Market, which will take place May 31, 2016 through August 30, 2016 from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesdays next to Mercer Park,1317 Dover Street.

As part of the Mayor’s Walk series, beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, Mayor Jim Throgmorton will be participating in the "Tour de Farm" bike ride through the Lucas Farms neighborhood. A Memorial Day celebration will be held at Oakland Cemetery, 1000 Brown Street, at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 30, 2016. The celebration will include an invocation, honoring of deceased, unknown soldiers, a reading of the Gettysburg Address and the Retiring of the Colors.
