According to state law, consumer fireworks sales in Iowa will begin Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017 and last through Jan. 3, 2018.

While their sale in the state of Iowa is legal, the City of Iowa City has instituted several restrictions for the sale and use of fireworks within city limits:

Firework use
Iowa City prohibits the use of fireworks inside city limits. Violators face a minimum $250 fine, per state law.

Firework sales
A recent amendment to the City’s fireworks ordinance limits the sale of fireworks to industrial zones – this includes areas with storage and factory facilities. Grocery stores and storefronts can no longer have fireworks for sale outside their buildings.
