The Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee and the South District Neighborhood Association are seeking qualifications for an Artist Mentor interested in a short-term public art project.
The Artist Mentor will guide an Emerging Artist through a public art project that results in a bus stop bench installation near the Heinz Road and Highway 6 intersection.
The project would involve an estimated 65 hours of service from the start this August through installation in 2023, including serving on a committee to select an Emerging Artist and then serving as a mentor to that artist through the process of gathering public input, creating a design, and fabrication of a bus stop bench.
The Emerging Artist will be the design leader in the project while the Artist Mentor will advise on functionality and techniques to accomplish the design intent. Compensation for the mentor will be a lump sum of $2,000.
The ideal Artist Mentor will have experience working on public art projects and be able to help coach the selected artist in the process of gathering public input from the South District through in-person or electronic meetings, selecting appropriate materials for fabrication, fabricating the design and installation of the bench, and finally, instructing the artist on maintenance techniques.
The timeline for the project begins as soon as the Artist Mentor is selected and will continue until installation is complete, estimated for June 2023. More information is available at icgov.org/PublicArt. Interested artists should apply by July 31 through our Artist Mentor Application.
