As of 7 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 18, leaf crews will continue collecting leaves in zone #5. It is anticipated that crews will be moving into zone #6 at some point later today.

Road Construction - Lafayette Street

Weather permitting, beginning on Friday, November 20, 2015, Lafayette Street, between Clinton Street and Capitol Street will be closed to thru traffic. This closure is necessary to facilitate water main improvements in the area and access will be maintained to all properties during the closure. It is anticipated that Lafayette Street will reopen to normal traffic by late morning on Saturday, November 21st.

City of Iowa City administrative offices at City Hall and other facilities will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Other closures or adjustments to schedules for the holiday are as follows:

Airport: The administration office will be closed Thursday and Friday. Jet Air will be available Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Available after hours for callout at 319-248-1200 (fees apply). Self-serve Avgas and Jet-A available around the clock.

Summer 2015 Senior Center survey results now available

During the summer of 2015, Linda Wastyn and Associates conducted a series of focus groups and surveys to gauge the interest of Center members in contributing to The Center beyond a Center membership; and identify areas of pride for members that could provide a foundation for a future marketing plan. The information collected would be used to develop a strategic fundraising plan beginning in the fall of 2015. The information provided in the focus groups helped staff to develop a strategic fundraising plan.

Senior Center fees will increase in Fiscal Year 2016

In 2014, the Iowa City City Council appointed an Ad Hoc Senior Services Committee to evaluate area senior services that received financial support from the City. Among other charges, the committee was to evaluate the Senior Center’s purpose, mission, goals and funding. An outcome of this investigation was a recommendation for The Center to diversify its operational funding and decrease its reliance upon the City’s General Fund for support. This recommendation stems from an anticipated decrease in City revenue due to changes in property tax law reform.

Juli Seydell Johnson named Director of Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department

The City of Iowa City has named Juli Seydell Johnson as the next Director of Parks and Recreation. Seydell Johnson, who will begin employment with the City on Monday, Jan. 4, succeeds Mike Moran, who retired on Sept. 25.

The Parks and Recreation Department consists of the Recreation, Parks and Forestry, Cemetery and Government Building operations of the City. Seydell Johnson will work with the Parks and Recreation Commission to direct the operational, financial, personnel and capital improvement activities of the department. Road Construction - Oakland Avenue

Weather permitting, beginning on Wednesday, November 18, 2015, Oakland Avenue, between Maple Street and Grant Court, will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate street pavement repair in the area. It is anticipated that Oakland Avenue will reopen to normal traffic by late morning on Thursday, November 19th.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time as delays may be possible. As always, caution should be exercised when driving through all construction areas.

S. Clinton Street reopening to traffic, several bus routes to resume normal service beginning Wednesday, Nov. 18

Effective Wednesday, Nov. 18, the outbound Lakeside, outbound Mall and inbound Cross Park routes will resume normal service due to S. Clinton Street reopening between Burlington Street and Court Street. The outbound Lakeside and Mall routes will no longer service the bus stops located at Washington Street and Linn Street (stop 7200) or Washington Street and Gilbert Street (stop 7201) after Tuesday, Nov. 17.
