Iowa City Police Captain Bill Campbell named Interim Chief

On Monday, Feb. 24, 2020, City Manager Geoff Fruin appointed Captain Bill Campbell to serve as Interim Police Chief, effective immediately.

The appointment follows the departure of current Police Chief Jody Matherly, who previously announced his retirement from the Iowa City Police Department earlier this month.

Captain Campbell was hired by the Iowa City Police Department on April 27, 1990, and served as a patrol officer and field training officer before being promoted to the rank of sergeant on December 22, 1996.

ICPD seeks input on new pilot program: Project Blue Able

The Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) is working towards the launch Project Blue Able, a program aimed at improving interactions with residents with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or those with speech and language impairments.

The ICPD has partnered with Access 2 Independence of the Eastern Iowa Corridor, and will host public forums from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, at Mercer Aquatic Center’s Proctor and Gamble Room, and from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at the Iowa City Public Library’s Meeting Room A.

The City of Iowa City, Iowa Works, Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and employers are teaming up to provide a one stop opportunity for youth, 16 to 21 years of age, to apply for jobs.

The Youth Job Fair is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2020, in the gymnasium of the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert St. While this event focused on youth between the ages of 16 to 21, it is open to all job seekers at no cost.

Electric vehicle charging station opens in Court Street Transportation Center

Iowa City residents and visitors can now charge their electric vehicles while parked in the Court Street Transportation Center, 150 E. Court St.

Users will need to download the ChargePoint app to their smartphone to activate the charger. Each port has a maximum of 6.2 kW available.

This adds to the EV infrastructure already available at the Capitol Street, Dubuque Street, Harrison Street, and Swan Ramp parking facilities. Installation of an EV charging station in the Tower Place Parking Ramp is scheduled for spring.

Clear your sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall in Iowa City

A reminder, sidewalks must be cleared within 24-hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended, for sidewalks to be used safely by pedestrians.Those who do not remove snow and ice may be fined.

Sidewalk policy

Property owners are responsible for the ice and snow removal from all sidewalks that abut their private property.

The entire width of the sidewalk must be cleared down to concrete. Renters should check their leases to see if their landlord has transferred the responsibility of snow and ice removal to them.
