The Iowa City Police Association Local 16 has begun its annual fundraising for the Shop with a Cop program. Iowa City police officers, along with emergency communications operators, police records personnel and volunteers have donated their time to make the event possible.
The program pairs an underprivileged child with an Iowa City police officer during the holiday season to shop for needed clothing and school supplies for themselves, and gifts for themselves and family members. The program has assisted hundreds of children and their families while fostering a positive interaction with a police officer. Additional funds provide support and outreach for other youth activities, sports programs and the association's death benefit fund.
The fundraising is done through phone calling, but donations may also be dropped off at the Iowa City Police Department. The success of the program would not be possible without the support from residents and business owners from the greater Iowa City, Coralville and Johnson County communities.
