Beginning in early December 2015, weather permitting, City of Iowa City Water Division staff will resume the annual water main valve exercising program. Valve exercising is part of regular maintenance to verify valves are operational and in good working order.

The program will begin along Mormon Trek Boulevard and move east through the City. When valves are exercised in your area, you may notice rust-colored water in your home or business. To minimize this, staff will also flush fire hydrants. The water is safe, but this discoloration may be a problem if you are washing laundry.

If you notice discolored water coming from your faucet, let it run until the color clears. Residents are encouraged to wash laundry in the evenings or on the weekend, not during the times valves are being exercised. Valves will be exercised Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. until weather conditions deteriorate or operations need to be shifted to repair main breaks.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, contact the Water Division at 319-356-5160.
