Spring street sweeping begins in March; check the schedule to avoid being towed

The Iowa City Streets Division will begin street sweeping in March to remove sand and debris to enhance public safety.

During this time, on-street parking will be prohibited in certain areas so that sweepers can access the full width of the street. Vehicles not moved will be towed. “No parking due to maintenance” signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance of any work to alert vehicle owners to move their cars. The City of Iowa City Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations for its Annual Youth Awards to recognize the contributions of youth who have promoted and/or contributed to human rights causes locally or globally. Nominations will be considered for work that has taken place since June 2016.

At a ceremony held on Friday, Feb. 17, 2017 at Iowa City’s Emma Harvat Hall, Fire Chief John Grier announced several internal promotions and recognized the following firefighters: Deputy Fire Chief Brian Platz, Battalion Chief Brian Rohr, Captain Bob Henry, Lieutenant/Training Officer Brandon Smith, Lieutenant Todd Irwin, and new Firefighter Cameron Reese.

A temporary pedestrian path has been provided between Park Road and Church Street. Walkers, joggers and bicyclists are no longer being re-routed off of Dubuque Street and over the Park Road Bridge to connect with the Hancher Pedestrian Bridge.

However, pedestrians and cyclists are still reminded to use other posted detours on Dubuque Street as the weather warms and work continues on the Iowa City Gateway Project .

A Cedar Rapids man was arrested following a recent shooting in Iowa City.

20-year-old Darius Elmere Davison was taken into custody on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017 on an arrest warrant for Attempted Murder, a Class B Felony.

Police responded to a report of shots fired and a man on the ground in the 2600 block of Bartelt Road just before 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017. Witness told police the suspect had a handgun and fired at least four rounds, striking the victim.
