City rolls out new curbside composting service

The City of Iowa City will begin collecting curbside compost on Monday, March 13, 2017.

The new program will help divert some of the roughly 18,000 tons of food waste that reaches the Iowa City Landfill each year. Residents will be able to compost many different types of foods, including fruits/vegetables, meats and grains, as well as paper products like pizza boxes, leftover containers and uncoated, disposable dishes.

UPDATE (03/08/17): The temporary pedestrian path between Park Road and Church Street has reopened.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE (03/06/17): Pedestrians need to again use a temporary detour that will re-route them off of Dubuque Street.

Crews need to close the temporary pedestrian path that recently opened between Park Road and Church Street to install water main. It will likely be closed for the week, but will reopen as soon as possible.

The Iowa City Police Department is reminding people to be cautious of scams during tax season, including scammers impersonating federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials.

City of Iowa City announces new City Clerk

Iowa City will soon have a new City Clerk.

The City Council has selected Christopher Guidry, an Iowa City resident, to be the next City Clerk. His employment agreement will be reviewed and voted on by the council during the March 7, 2017 meeting.

Guidry is an experienced business development leader and trained lawyer. He most recently worked as an Education Technology Consultant and served as the Director of Workforce Solutions Partnerships at ACT.

UPDATE: Iowa City Police officers have made an arrest following a recent gunshots investigation.

On Saturday, February 25, 2017, just before 9 p.m. police responded to the area of Taylor and Hollywood Drives after receiving reports of several gunshots in the area.

Officers checked the area and found a vehicle that had been shot multiple times and initiated an investigation. A potential suspect was developed by the investigating officers.
