Don’t just throw out that pumpkin after Halloween! The City of Iowa City Solid Waste Division reminds you to compost it instead.

Pumpkins must be placed in a City of Iowa City yard waste bag or a container with a current yard waste sticker. There is a 50-pound weight limit per bag. Pumpkins should not be put in your regular household garbage container.

Yard waste bags, priced at $1.25 each, are available for purchase at participating Iowa City grocery, hardware and general merchandise stores, and at the Iowa City City Hall Cashier (410 E. Washington St.). Generic paper yard waste bags cannot be substituted for City-branded yard waste bags if you wish for curbside pickup.

Annual yard waste stickers cost $25 and can be placed on a container no larger than 35 gallons that you supply. Stickers can be purchased in person at the Customer Service Cashier, City Hall, 410 E. Washington Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Written orders may also be mailed to the Cashier at the above address, including name, service address, mailing address (if different), and check in the amount of $25.50 to cover postage/handling fee for each sticker ordered. Persons may order by phone at 319-356-5066 with MasterCard or Visa credit card between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
