Sprinkler system controls fire at 2605 Naples Avenue

The Iowa City Fire Department (ICFD) responded to a reported fire alarm at Menards, 2605 Naples Avenue, at 3:29 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5. The first unit arrived to find multiple sprinkler heads activated in the detached lumber storage building. The fire crew found the fire to be mostly extinguished with small spot fires located in the rack storage. There were no occupants in the structure at the time of the fire.

Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) Chief Sam Hargadine swore in Jeffery Schmidt as a Police Officer during a ceremony at Emma J. Harvat Hall on Thursday, Jan. 7. Officer Schmidt, 26, is originally from Oxford, Iowa, and graduated from Loras College, in Dubuque, Iowa, in 2013 with a B.A. in criminal justice and English. Road Construction - Dubuque Street

Beginning at 9 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 7, Dubuque Street will be reduced to one lane of southbound traffic from Taft Speedway to Park Road. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate utility work in the area. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by the end of the day.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.
