Update: On Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at approximately 8:35 p.m., emergency responders were called to 86 Aniston Street in Iowa City by concerned family members who observed through a window of the residence Latoya Smith laying on the bathroom floor.

Upon entry into the locked residence, Iowa City Police discovered the deceased bodies of Latoya Smith and Floyd Rush. The subsequent investigation determined that Rush shot Smith several times with a handgun before turning the handgun on himself. Financial assistance still available to qualified households impacted by pandemic

The City recently received additional Community Development Block Grant-CV (CDBG-CV) funds through the Iowa Economic Development Authority to assist in its response to the pandemic. This funding provides an additional $390,000 in assistance to help Iowa City households secure housing and prevent homelessness through CommUnity Crisis Services.

Funds are available to provide rent, mortgage, and/or utility assistance to those financially impacted by COVID. Since the pandemic began, the City has allocated over $748,000 to our area partners, including CommUnity Crisis Services, Shelter...

Iowa City Police seeking the public's assistance in identifying a person of interest

On September 10, 2020 employees at Lemme Elementary School at 3100 E Washington St. in Iowa City discovered that the outdoor cameras on the building had been covered in spray paint. The cameras experienced damage that caused them to be inoperable.

The Iowa City Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest who was captured on the school’s cameras prior to the damage.

Second Council Listening Post on improving community policing focuses on special needs populations

Members of the Iowa City City Council will hold a Listening Post at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, over Zoom. Council representatives Susan Mims, John Thomas, and Janice Weiner will be in attendance.

This event will serve as the second in a series of six listening posts to aid in the development of a plan to improve community policing. Each event will feature a different area of focus, and relevant service providers will be invited to contribute their insight and expertise to the conversation.

The City's Office of Equity and Human Rights has written a memo on the issue of appearance discrimination in the workplace, one of the most common areas of discrimination and one of the least acknowledged.

Although appearance discrimination is not currently illegal, there are active court cases pending when the discriminatory behavior is tied to a person's protected class, such as natural hair or weight.

Mayor's face covering order extended to Nov. 13

Mayor Bruce Teague has extended an order that was originally put into place July 21, 2020, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The extended order requires that every person in the City of Iowa City must wear a face covering when in a public place.

The order, extended on Monday, Sept. 14, 2020, states that a face covering that covers the nose and mouth must be worn in all public spaces until Friday, Nov. 13, 2020. The order in its entirety can be read online...
