The City of Iowa City is now accepting applications from organizations for public services, public facilities, and affordable housing projects for Fiscal Year 2021. Applications are due by noon on Friday, Jan. 31, 2020.

Aid to Agencies (A2A) provides flexible operational funding for nonprofits providing public services. The City expects approximately $23,000 to be available for agencies that are not classified as “legacy” agencies in City Steps 2025, the City’s 2021-2025 Consolidated Plan, online at www.icgov.org/actionplan. A vital position that bridges the gap between the community and law enforcement is changing hands.

After four years of serving as the Community Relations Officer for the Iowa City Police Department, Ashten Hayes will be moving back to Patrol.

During her time in the position, Officer Hayes created many connections by attending community events and responding to citizen concerns. She says it's those relationships that she’ll miss most.

What you need to know before winter storms

With a winter storm approaching, the City of Iowa City reminds residents to have a plan in place ahead of the storm.

We ask that residents avoid parking on the street so that snow plows can clear the roads as quickly as possible.

Residents should also have a plan to clear sidewalks of snow and ice 24 hours after accumulation ends. This rule applies for any snow storm of more than one inch.

If there's a curb ramp near your house, be a good neighbor and clear them of snow and ice as well.

Administrative offices at City Hall will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The City is partnering with several local organizations to host an event to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Note: Curbside garbage, recycling and organics will be collected on Monday.

Offices or facilities that will be closed or will operate on a revised schedule include:

Partial trail closure for Iowa River Trail on Jan. 8, 2020

A part of the Iowa River Trail between Highway 6 and Napoleon Park will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The closure will allow for work related to the Iowa City Airport's Obstruction Mitigation project. The trail is located directly east of the Airport.

The work on the trail is expected to be completed the same day.

Road Closure – Iowa Avenue

Weather permitting, beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, Iowa Avenue will be closed to traffic from Riverside Drive / Highway 6 to Madison Street.

This closure will allow for repair work to be completed on the CRANDIC Railroad overpass on Iowa Avenue. It is anticipated that Iowa Avenue will reopen to normal traffic by the end of the day on Friday, Jan. 10. However, the westbound lanes of traffic will be closed again on Monday, Jan. 13 through Friday, Jan. 17.

Motorists are to take note of this work and seek an alternate route during this time period. As always, caution...

Keep your carts out: yard waste pickup delayed

Pickup of yard waste by City of Iowa City crews has been delayed due to the New Year’s Day holiday and high usage of yard waste and organics carts by curbside customers.

The delay means customers whose refuse is picked up on Thursdays can expect their yellow-lid yard waste and organics carts to be picked up on Friday instead. Garbage and recycling pickup is still running on time.

City staff urges residents to keep their yard waste at the curb until it is picked up.
